We all experience situations where we wish we had been more assertive in order to achieve our goals, whilst considering the needs of others.

  • Verbal and non-verbal behaviours associated with aggressive, assertive and submissive behaviour.
  • The benefits of being assertive for ourselves, our colleagues, managers, customers and clients.
  • Why we behave aggressively, assertively or passively in different situations and with different people. This awareness will help us consider how we can achieve the best possible outcome.
  • Assertive communication skills such as giving attention, listening, asking questions, non-verbal communication and giving or receiving feedback.
  • Opportunities to practice techniques and skills for behaving assertively in different situations, for example when making a request, saying “no”, giving difficult feedback to someone, receiving feedback constructively and putting forward a different view. This will include tools such as negotiation and broken record.
  • Ways of feeling more confident internally about being assertive, for example, self-esteem, talking positively to yourself and considering your rights and responsibilities as well as those of others.
  • How to take the learning from the course back into your life and work.
