The actual programme itself in terms of how it was presented, and the learning methods that we went through were excellent. I was very unsure early on as there was an expected level of participation and “being thrown in at the deep end” approach. Initially this put me quite some way out of my comfort zone given my theorist learning style but I quickly adapted to what was required and I believe benefited greatly as a result.

This course is highly effective in all topics ensuring everybody has been constantly involved right from the first minute. The visual, auditory and participative styles of learning have been excellent alongside the later reflection and completion of a learning log for learning re-enforcement.

The greatest benefit has been the realisation that as a manager I do not have to have all the answers. This is particularly relevant since I was promoted from a technical role and it was becoming increasingly difficult to answer the technical questions. The coaching tools on the course have provided the solution in that by coaching my staff on the technical issues, they find their own solutions, leaving me with more time to be proactive in the management of the department, i.e. provides me with the necessary free time to ensure that my employees have all the support they need.

Perhaps the biggest gain for me has been in the development of my coaching skills. I have to train several junior engineers and students and this can take up much of my time. I realised that I was too eager to take their problems and solve them for them. By being conscious of building an adult-to-adult relationship with them as well as using the questioning style I learned from coaching I have been able to set them on the route to seeing themselves as their own problem solver instead of me. And then there were the monkeys. That simple illustration of how we take on other people’s tasks to the detriment of our own time-management has helped me to learn to say “no” more often or at least to aware of what is happening before I say “yes”.

In summery this has empowered me to develop not only myself but the skills of my team. It has created a real understanding of the type of leadership needed in company, necessary to produce a high performing team. The type of leader that inspires (the type I want to be).
